Extend and Enhance the Functionality of the Recycle Bin in Windows. There is a free tool, called RecycleBinEx, which is a Recycle Bin manager available for Windows that allows you to automatically empty the Recycle Bin based on how old the files are and also adds other functionality to the Recycle Bin. RecycleBinEx works in versions of Windows from Windows 7 back to Windows 98

To install RecycleBinEx, double-click on the .exe file you downloaded.

If the User Account Control dialog box displays, click Yes to continue.

NOTE: You may not see this dialog box, depending on your User Account Control settings.

The Welcome screen on the setup wizard displays. Click Next.

Read through the License Agreement and select the I accept the agreement radio button. Click Next.

The Select Destination Location screen displays. If you want to install RecycleBinEx to a different location other than the default location listed in the edit box, use the Browse button to select another location. We accepted the default location. Click Next to continue.
You can also use RecycleBinEx on the command line in a command prompt window. To do this, open a command prompt window and navigate to the directory containing the RecycleBinEx.exe file. An easy way to do this is to open Windows Explorer, navigate to the desired directory, right-click on the .exe file, and select Open command window here option from the popup menu. To access this option on the popup menu, see our post, Open a Command Prompt from any Folder in Windows.
When the command prompt window opens, enter the following line at the prompt and press Enter.

The Select Start Menu Folder screen displays. If you want to add the shortcuts for RecycleBinEx to a different Start menu folder than the default listed in the edit box, use the Browse button. We accepted the default Start menu folder. Click Next to continue.

On the Select Additional Tasks screen, you can select the Create a desktop icon for RecycleBinEx check box to put a shortcut to RecycleBinEx on the desktop. This option is selected by default. Click Next.

The Ready to Install screen displays with a summary of the settings you selected. If you want to change any of the settings, use the Back button. Otherwise, click Install to continue with the installation.

Once the installation is done, the Completing the RecycleBinEx Setup Wizard screen displays. If you want RecycleBinEx to start as soon as you close the setup wizard, select the Launch RecycleBinEx check box so there is a check mark in it. It should be selected by default. Click Finish to close the setup wizard.

The RecycleBinEx Manager window displays. The items in the Recycle Bin display in a list. The Location, Deleted Time, Size, and Logical Disk for each item is listed.


The Options dialog box displays. To use the Auto clean up feature, you need to have RecycleBinEx start when Windows starts. The Run RecycleBinEx when Windows Startup check box should be selected by default. If not, select the check box so there is a check mark in the box. Select the Auto clean up the items deleted check box. Enter a number of days in the edit box before “days ago” indicating the minimum age of items you want removed from the Recycle Bin. Click OK.

You can also manually delete items older than a certain time using the Select All button. Clicking the Select All button itself selects all the items in the Recycle Bin. To select only items older than a certain time, click the down arrow to the right of the Select All button to open the drop-down menu. Select the age of the items you want to select to be deleted. You can also turn off your selections using the UnSelect All option on the Select All drop-down menu.

If you want to find an item containing specific text, click in the Filter content edit box, enter the text for which you want to search, and press Enter.

If you have had the RecycleBinEx Manager open while deleting additional files, click the Refresh button to included the most recently deleted files in the list in RecycleBinEx.

To close the RecycleBinEx manager, click the X button in the upper, right corner of the RecycleBinEx window.
You can sort the items in the Recycle Bin by the different headings. For example, to sort all the items by how long ago they were deleted, click the Deleted Time heading. The items are sorted and grouped under subheadings.

To manually delete one or more items, select the items the same way you would select files and folders in Windows Explorer (using the Shift and Ctrl keys) and click the Delete button.
To set up RecycleBinEx to automatically delete items in the Recycle Bin, click the Options button.



When you installed RecycleBinEx, additional items were added to the context menu for the Recycle Bin. You don’t need to start RecycleBinEx every time you want to clean up the items you deleted 15 days ago, for example. Simply right-click on the Recycle Bin and select the desired option. You can also select RecycleBinEx Manager on the popup menu to open the RecycleBinEx Manager.
